Some quiz deadlines extended until Monday Nov. 16 5pm

I extended the deadlines of the quizzes from 10-19-09 to the present. They’re now due Monday November 16 before 5pm.

I don’t want to encourage you to procrastinate! But I know there’s a lot to get done and I want you to do as many quizzes as you can. Take them twice!

Updates on the 3rd test!

In class today we chose the question for the test. It’s the first of the two listed below. The PowerPoint from today on Brazilian slavery and the cities of Minas Gerais [could be useful for the test!] is available on the PowerPoints page of our WebCT site.

About the on-line lectures ….

As I get ready to leave for this conference, I’m not able to churn out the on-line lectures as the rate I had hoped. I have two up on WebCT now [and no quizzes yet] when I had hoped to have 4. There will be another up early tomorrow and I hope to have the quizzes up for those up by Wednesday night, if I can find an internet connection. Those three will be all for this week; then I’ll try to have another batch of 3 or 4 up next weekend. See you next week — and enjoy The Mission!

Speaking of missions, this image is of a colonial-era statue of St Philip of Jesus. He was born in Mexico, became a Franciscan priest, and was martyred in the Japanese city of Nagasaki while on a mission in that country in 1597.

Rather than use our classroom, which is locked at 9am, I’ve reserved room 417 in the library from 9am to 10am Wed. 10-21 and Fri. 10-23. I also put the DVD on reserve at the library too.

When you go on Wednesday morning, tell them you’re from Dr. Garrigus’s class and that you need to take over the reservation in your name. They just need your UTA ID in order to give you the room key. Then ask them for the DVD which should be at the reserve desk. You can come back at any time and watch the DVD there on your own.

WebCT Grade Book

If you’ve been checking your grades on the WebCT gradebook, you will have seen a change recently. I changed from a percentage system to a points system, since a lot of students have told me they find it easier to keep track.

I changed the value of your Mann score to reflect the 240 point value of that assignment. I also just added the first of 3 class participation [CP] grades, based on a 65 point score. so 58.5 or higher [90% of 65] would be an A for class participation.

Heres the grading table from the syllabus, updated to show the new point system.

Help with Google Earth files

Two types of downloading problems have caused headaches for students trying to get these files.
Because of this, I’ve pushed the quiz deadline back to Friday at 5pm.

Both problems have easy solutions:

1. When you are offered a choice between “open the file” and “save the file”, chose “save”. [This is almost always a better choice; running a file directly as a download is a good way to get a computer virus]. Once the file is saved, then you can click on it and run it.
2. Your browser may try to download these files as a “zip” folder. You need to over-ride that by changing the last part of the file name.
Make it “.doc” if it is a Word document.
Make it “.kmz” if it is a GoogleEarth file.

This Monday — Cortés and Google Earth

Instead of our usual set of four on-line lectures, this week I’m asking you to do the second Google Earth tour of the road from Veracruz to Mexico City. Just like last time, you’ll find the two files [one a Word doc; the other a kmz file to load in Google Earth] under “Class Materials” on our WebCT site.
You can run Google Earth in the library or in the University Hall computer lab. Also, it’s a free program to download at home, but it works best with a fast internet connection.
Later on Monday, there’ll be 4 short quizzes on WebCT over this assignment.

I have posted the usual four quizzes on the four 9/21 on-line lectures. I didn’t put them up until Tuesday because I knew you were busy with the test/paper. You can take them any time up to noon on Friday, 9/26.
